DEAR FRIENDS,
Right in the middle of the busiest congress – period of the year, it’s my duty to send you a few words from the « deck of the EFOST » boat.
Since the beginning of the year, your Board members have been extremely busy, representing EFOST, organising local or larger meetings, and working on the further organisation of EFOST, in cooperation with our sister societies ISAKOS, ESSKA, SLARD and APOA.
It all started with the VAL D’ ISERE meeting, late January. Quite a few members of the EFOST family were not only present but gave lectures, and particularly, discussed with collegues from the ESSKA board about future organisations and cooperation.
Our vice-president, Francois Kelberine, and Philippe Landreau( who accepted to be the co-program chairman at the EFOST –BRUSSELS meeting in 2010, together with Fredrik Almqvist), did a great job in organising this top-level meeting about knee surgery: we are already looking forward to the next ski-meeting about knee surgery : Jan 2010. Make already a note in your agenda : it is really an exciting week there in the French Alps.
In February the full EFOST Board came together for a full day of brainstorming at the Munich Airport !
Organigram, finances, future meetings, the EFOST fellowship, relations with other societies and the pharmaceutical industry, and of course the programs of the upcoming EFOST meetings were the main topics.
But a lot of time was also spent discussing the different ways how to communicate better with the individual members ! The Board accepted to give more autonomy and responsability to the national delegates in the different countries !
The E-mail letter will be sent by Mahmut N Doral to the delegates who have to forward it to the members of their national society.
Mario Mosconi will update the list of the delegates and contact them to fill in the missing adresses or names !
For the moment we are discussing with different AGA and GOTS members to find 2 dedicated delegates for the German speaking sports medicine world ! Burt Klos will hopefully come op soon with some good names.
The AAOS meeting in SAN FRANCISCO, March of this year, was a great opportunity to meet the ISAKOS people at the different committee meetings, also your president had the opportunity to explain the EFOST fellowship project at the AOSSM TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE BOARD meeting, under the chair of Marc Safran. Neil Thomas and Thomas Fritchy were also present at that meeting and helped to pass the message of a true and short fellowship « on the field »
The real problem seems to be the lack of candidates to fill in the different fellowship places. Today I’m still waiting for the official answer of the full AOSSM BOARD.
If we cannot find an agreement with AOSSM, we will discuss and propose some valuable travelling fellowship alternatives. We will keep you informed about the different answers and follow-up.
Another important issue what also was discussed at the Board meeting : can a country be represented by more than one sportsmedicine society ?
The answer is YES : the only one condition is that the « group » of surgeons should be active in the sportsmedicine field ! So your president was invited at the combined DUTCH national sportsmedicine congress in Almelo, to explain the interest of the Dutch Arthroscopy Society to become a member of EFOST. BURT KLOS, boardmember of the Dutch Sportsmedicine Society ( already member of EFOST) will send us the official answer of his arthrocopy society.
At the end of March, the whole world of Sportsmedicine gathered together in HONG KONG, CHINA, where KM Chang organised the 5th World Congress of Sportsmedicine, by tradition hold in the country and the year of the Olympic Games. Dr. Benazzo, Dr. Hackney, Dr. Maffulli and Dr. Doral were in this meeting as a representative of EFOST group. Professor S Woo is one of the promotore of EFOST. He was with us in this meeting.
The present EFOST Board members came together during that world meeting to discuss some urgent points.
The relationship with the partners of the Industry was clarified : the Board likes to stimulate the individual members to contact or to work with the companies who have signed or promissed an agreement of partnership with EFOST : we repeat once more our partners today : TIGENIX, STRIJKER, MITEK ( J & J ), ORTHOMED, SMITH-NEPHEW,…….
A pleasant dinner at a steak house, where Prof. S. WOO was also invited to, was organised to close the EFOST participation in Hong Kong.
The ARGENTINE ARTHROSCOPY SOCIETY was held in Buenos Aires from the 7th until the 9th of May. As I was one of the invited speakers, I had a lot of opportunities to promote the upcoming EFOST session in Porto ( during the ESSKA meeting), the bi-annual EFOST meeting in Antalya and the 2010 meeting in Brussels. We have already invited some South American experts to participate at the Brussels meeting.
Dr Daniel Slulitel would like to open the Argentine Journal of Arthroscopy to the whole South America AS world an dis looking for articles to be published in his journal. Papers can be sent in English, he will take care of the trannslation into Spanish. But of course case-studies, pearls or technical notes can always be sent to PROF M N Doral who will find a place in the E-letter or on the Website of EFOST.
Pretty soon I hope to see a lot of EFOST members at the PORTO meeting, particularly at the sportsmedicine sessions. I will report about the Board meeting, to be organised in the Portugese port.
The EFOST specialty day during the EFORT congress in NICE, is hold the 30th of May in the afternoon.
The details of the program ( put together by F Kelberine and G Mann ) about « extreme sports » looks very exciting. Details on the EFOST website.
In the beginning of June, the SLARD MEETING will be hold in CANCUN ( 4th – 7th of June).
Prof Alberto Pienovi, president of SLARD, has accepted a SETRADA-EFOST session ; topic : NEW TRENDS IN ACL SURGERY.
As you can see, a lot of opportunities to meet friends, exchange scientific information and promote EFOST.
Finally, as you know, the next EFOST meeting will be held in Antalya on 26-29 of November. The program Chairs, Dr. Tandogan and Dr. Kelberine are already finished his job. Dr.Doral and I would like to invite you all in this congress with pleinty of sports trauma activities.
Let’s meet in Antalya in November 26-29, 2008 for the 5th EFOST Congress at the Sheraton-Antalya, website; www.efost2008
Amitiés,
